About “Grandpa”:
I started photographing my Grandparents in their
house starting in 2005. I make pictures of them because I love them, and it
has always been my way of being able to have an excuse to go to their house
and spend time with them. My Grandfather was born in Germany and came to the
United States after World War II. Over the course of my life I developed a
dream and desire to go back to Germany, to go back to where he came from.
I was always fascinated with his accent, his stories, his way of telling me
about his home when he was a child. In 2008 I began to travel to Germany
quite often and in 2010 moved from Chicago to Nürnberg. In 2010 I also
traveled to an area in Germany where my Grandfather spent a lot of time
in his youth. The series Grandpa is an exploration of my relationship my
Grandfather, where he came from, where I came from, where I am now, and what
all that looks like. It is a documentation of my Grandparents’ relationship.
It is a series of photographs of the people and places that I love the most.
About “Slides from a Drawer”:
I have a Father. He has a Father. When my
Grandfather died he left behind thousands of slides he had taken from the
1940’s to the 1970’s. This is a selection of these slides that I have
digitized and restored. It’s the story of my father’s side of the Family,
a story I never knew, filled with secrets, only able to be told by the
slides that were found in this drawer. Some of these slides were heavily damaged,
and I have brought them back to life with digital restoration.
